Course Description The aim of this course is for each student to be able to analyze an indigenous foreign language he or she has not known, eliciting linguistic data from an informant of the language.
NB in Registration
It might be helpful to those who are seriously thinking of seeking a higher degree in academics (or scientific research into certain phenomena) or to those who would like to learn a yet-undescribed foreign language.
Class Plan This course is an introduction to scientific research into an indigenous foreign language or dialect. The target language may be, for example, 1) languages or dialects that participants of this course are native speakers of and 2) dialects of the Japanese language, e.g., Saga western and eastern dialects, Yamaguchi dialect, that participants' tutors or friends are native speakers of.
Students are required to report short grammatical (morphological and syntactic) sketches for grammatical patterns in class based on their findings and make six to seven 15-20 minute oral presentations in class in one semester. So, in addition to usual class, each student will meet with his or her informant for one-to-two hours every week to elicit data.
If you have already known the language or dialect, then you are required to do more work than normal.
If you want to take another two credits of this course after having taken two credits from this course in a previous semester, you need to work more for the same language or dialect or need to choose another language or dialect different from the one you analyzed in the previous semester.
You will see how you can find a linguistic pattern of a language through eliciting data of the language from an informant, as an example from the instructor.
