I went to a department store to buy a bag.

· buy a bag [Verb Base] à かばんを　かｗ

· went to a department store à わたしは　デパートにいきました。

Purpose-of-Movement Particle に

The particle /ni/ takes a minimal verb phrase with its verb Verb Base + /i/, and indicates that the verb phrase of the verb base + /i/ is the purpose of the verb modified by that /ni/ phrase. The verb modifiable by this /ni/ phrase is only the verbs that refer to a movement from one place to another, e.g., /いk/ ‘go’, /k/ ‘come’, /かえr/ ‘return’.

１）わたしは　デパートに　かばんを　かいに　いきました。

N.B. /かw/ + /i/ is pronounced as かい, which is the same as the pre-/mas/ form かいます.

a) Mary has come to Japan to study Japanese.

b) Please come to the library to borrow that book.
